Photos with your kids

I'm sure it is no shock to anyone who reads here that I take a lot of photos. Especially of my kids. I love capturing their personalities and the stage they are in... because if you have ever seen kid grow... it is always changing and goes by so so fast. I look back lovingly at professional photos, fun faces, big messes and even first tears. I try and keep anything that could embarrass them off the Internet and for family eyes only but it's so nice to see baby rolls and double chins and to find it so cute and lovely.

I've noticed in the past two and a half years (since having Logan) that I also take a lot of Geoff and the kids but have a quarter of the amount of myself with the kids. When he does snap a photo or two of us, I am always picking myself apart in the photos. I think... I would never share this one... look how fat I look. Or I look so tired and my hair isn't done. It's awful.
This past 4th of July we were playing outside. Logan and Quinn were decked out in cute outfits while Geoff and I had managed to shower that day. I was in a festive t shirt and leggings with my hair barely brushed and no makeup on. The light was beautiful as the sun was just starting to set and I ran out to get my camera to get a photo of the kids. I promised Logan a Popsicle if he held Quinn for a shot (which he did and then proceeded to eat his, mine and Geoffs). Afterwards I snapped some shots of Geoff and Quinn and then he asked if I wanted a few photos of myself.
At first I thought, no. My hair is a mess, I'm in leggings... but then I figured that this is life. This is my real life. Not the cream of the crop shots that look so perfect and put together. I need these photos to remind myself what life was all about in this stage. That we were living life and having fun. That some days are messy and I'm in pj's all day. That most days lately, my make up is sunscreen and chap stick and I have bags under my eyes. But that I am loving my kids and enjoying it all. (Well most of it... potty training and toddler beds are a little dicey at times)

I still like to have lovely staged shots to hang in the house and send to family but this season as I try and get the rest of the baby weight off me and I don't remember the last time I really felt rested... I am going to say yes to photos and try and see all the love that is in them. These are the days that everyone says I will miss later on so I want to hold on and remember them all the ways possible. And that includes photos like this... just me with the little loves of my life.

Thomas Photo Shoot

The other weekend, I talked about my back to back photo sessions. I thought I would share my other session while we are walking around Montreal and eating a lot of gravy covered fries!!!

We headed to Benson Park for this photo shoot. It was a beautiful afternoon and the park was PACKED! Luckily I got a few angles where it made it seem like the park was pretty empty. My experience shooting Thomas was a lot more like shooting Logan. He was a busy guy and on the move. Luckily he loves his Dada and we were able to get lots of fun expressions out of this kid. I was exhausted after close to an hour with him. Too much fun!

Renee Photography Session

Two weekends ago, I had two back to back photo shoots. I was so so excited since we ended up with fantastic weather both days. I took Logan out the week before to scout out both my locations and check out how the light angles were compared to how I shoot in the summer and fall.

Here are a few from my Friday session with this little beauty Renee and her family. I just adored her. She was in such a great mood and doesn't quite walk yet so I was able to get a lot of her facial expressions while we enticed her with a talking remote, Elmo and snacks. Hope you enjoy! I hope I get to capture more of her family as she grows!

Practice session at the park

Since the weather has been warming up (finally) I've been booking a few spring photography sessions. I do the majority of my work outdoors, since I do not have access to a studio. I have been checking out the parks and watching the sunlight like crazy the past week to see where I would like to shoot and see where my angles with the sun are. Things are looking very different since shooting in the fall and I can't wait to see what everything looks like when the flowers start blooming!
The other day I took Logan to run around at a park near my house and use him as my little model. It is so so so much harder to shoot a running toddler when you have no other help. One hand I was trying to make sure he didn't tumble over tree roots, eat rocks or fall down little hills and the other was snapping away.
I tried to have a good balance of playing vs shooting but I guess I did a pretty poor job at it because near the end Logan ran over, pushed my camera away and shook his head no at me. Oops. Kinda crazy that he can show me that he is frustrated at me. I snapped one more photo and  put down the camera for the rest of our time.
If I can get a sunny day like this for my shoots, I will be a super happy girl... the light in the spring is just so beautiful!
as always, if you are looking for a photographer in the Boston/NH area, feel free to contact me about booking a session. :)

Another cake smash

So, I was lucky enough to photograph Logan's friend Travis for his first birthday cake smash session. This little cutie was all about the cake and it was so much fun to watch him destroy his. I hope he has as much fun at his party!!!
Here are a few of my favorites from his photo shoot...

Cake Smash Photo Session.

Cake smash sessions are one of those things that people either love or hate.

It's ok to hate them. We have tried our best from the start to give Logan healthy foods- mainly veggies and fruits carefully watching his salt and sugar intake. I've made a lot of the foods he eats and always think about what I can order to share with him while we are out at restaurants. So the thought of giving a baby a whole (small cake) to smash, eat and play with is kind of a weird concept.

With that said, I am going to admit that I fully side with the people that Loves them! There is something really special about watching a kids curiosity turn into pure delight when they are given the freedom to experience something new. Taste, texture, the feel of cake in between fingers and toes... it's so messy but so much fun.

Years ago, I worked in a portrait studio (before my flight attendant gig) and I was so happy whenever someone would book a cake smash session and I would get to shoot it. So, after having Logan, I just knew we were going to do this!

I baked and decorated our cake the night before. I set up everything in the morning... after breakfast but before the first nap. This way he was not starving but not full and happily awake playing. We dressed him and when I was ready, Geoff set him down in place while I snapped away.

Once we were done taking photos, we stripped him down and plopped him right in the bath to wash up. That is the beauty of being able to set up in my own home.

We had a great time watching him explore and destroy this cake. I wasn't too sure how it was going to go since he really only played with the icing of his cake at his party. Some kids dive right in and others don't like the mess... but that is the beauty of these shoots, every kids reacts differently.

The Potenza Family Photos

Yup, here I am popping back in for another gorgeous family shoot I had with my friend Kate! Taking photos in November in the northeast is really hit or miss. It was frigid and windy out but we were blessed with some beautiful light! The next day there was snow on the ground so I was really glad we were able to sneak these in before the weather hit. :)

(I couldn't help myself, I had to include this precious little face. That was the end of our session! What a trooper out in the cold.)

Can't wait to photograph your family again soon!
