New York move, New York Tornado

Well, I'm finally back. To make things short the movers came and 5 hours later they had all of our belongings packed away into 99 boxes and on their way to Michigan. That night we checked into a hotel in Flushing, NY (since we were flying out of LGA the next morning) and had our last meal at Joe's Shanghai Restaurant in Flushing.

If you have not been here you are seriously missing out! They have the best soup dumplings- Yum!!! It was a great ending to our year in NYC.
(our roommate and his friend came and met us for our last super)

The next morning I got up at 4am, caught a flight to Cincinnati, ran 9 miles in the park, packed up the car with at my parents house and drove it to Columbus (my pit stop for the weekend before continuing on to Detroit). On the way I got a phone call from Geoff. After we left that morning, New York got hit by storms, storms so bad that a Tornado went through Queens and Forest Hills and touched down in Brookyln. Trees were down on top of cars, one side of my apartment building had to be evacuated because the wall was crumbling in, windows were blown out of buildings, the subway and LIRR were stopped and a few people died.
Luckily, my roommate who we had just had dinner with was safe and sound, since we had no internet or cable he didn't even know it was a tornado until he went outside after. Here are a few photos he took on his iphone.

It was very surreal to know that I was just there that very morning, that that was my neighborhood and that we weren't going to be heading back to all the mess. It made me kinda sad but also I felt very lucky. If we had been moving one day later, we would have been moving in a tornado and that would have been a complete disaster!

Goodbye Forest Hills! It was a nice year with you.

Wow.... tornadoes are a midwest thing. That's terrible in a highly populated area.

I had to take a flight the other day and practiced everything you taught me. I paid attention during the safety briefing and I DID NOT STARE at the flight attendant when she was strapped in her jump seat. I did glance, that's OK, right? HA. I also had a giggle when she couldn't pronounce the first officer's name because it was something really difficult. I love to read your adventures but don't always have time to comment.
